Dramaturgs In Practice Training Programme 2021

Dramaturgs In Practice (DIP) is part of Centre 42's Dramaturgs' Practice Development Programme that aims to fill a gap in current dramaturgs’ practices in Singapore: it provides grounding on basic tools and a shared literacy in the dramaturg’s practices. This programme combines workshop style discussions based on prescribed readings, mock-dramaturgy projects, research projects and project attachments. 

Helmed by Dr Robin Loon, the 9-month long bespoke training programme features a professionalisation focus for prospective dramaturgs and is suitable for experienced / mid-career practitioners who are interested in expanding their dramaturgical skills, and/or moving towards becoming dramaturgs in the performing arts sector. 

This DIP programme provides participants, termed Dramaturgs-in-Training (DT), with practical application and practice opportunities via work attachments, and encourage a self-critical and reflexive knowledge-building into the dramaturg’s practices

Duration: 

• February 2021 – November 2021 (9 months)
• 2-3 month flexibility is to be factored in to the entire course duration, as the programme is very much tailored to the individual and responds accordingly to the time needs of creation and production processes, as well as the larger arts ecosystem's response to changing Covid-19 safety measures.

Schedule:

I. Bridging Course (only for identified participants)

• Introduction to the Dramaturg’s Work, bridging syllabus
• Reading materials provided prior to start of course (from 28 Jan – 5 Feb, 1.5 weeks) 
• 1 x 3hr online Zoom session

II. Practice Attachment - Matching and Introductions

• Identify, match, clarify, meet with Attachment companies and/or projects

III. Cohort Preparation Workshop (Group session)

• Brief on structure, assignments, documentation & presentations
• Preparatory work, lay ground/engagement guidelines

IV. Practice Attachment #1 and Scheduled Consultations 

• Approximate 10 weeks
• Min. 1 x 1hr sessions with Robin, per project attachment
• one-to-one dedicated clinics/consults with Robin
• Coaching/Stewarding access via email throughout attachment period

V. Mid-Point Presentations and Sharing

• 1 x internal sharing session, to share & peer learn.
• Programme attachment partners will be invited to attend 
• Held in-person or online (Zoom)

VI. Practice Attachment #2 and Scheduled Consultations

• Approximate 10 weeks
• Min. 1 x 1hr sessions with Robin, per project attachment
• one-to-one dedicated clinics/consults with Robin
• Coaching/Stewarding access via email throughout attachment period

VII. Public Presentation and Wrap Up

• 1 x public sharing session
• Programme participants to craft their presentations to share their learnings/experiences and importantly to raise awareness about dramaturgy and the role of the dramaturg.

Participation: 

• Cohort size: 5pax. 
• Course fee: $750
• The experience for each Dramaturg-in-Training (DT) is individual, and learning parameters and outcomes are tailored to him/her/them in consultation with programme facilitator Dr Robin Loon
• Course batching provides a peer learning and exchange environment facilitated at suitable milestones of the programme, and allows for the growth of a network of dramaturgs.
