Playwright Zulfadli Rashid, also affectionally known as Big, joins us as our Writer in Residence from April 2023 to September 2023. This 6-month residency aims to spotlight and platform the Writer in Residence through presentations of his work(s), and engagements with younger writers and the public.

As part of the residency, Big will also be participating in the New Scripts Garage, offering dramaturgical support and feedback to scripts from the open call.

Residency Schedule

The Writer-in-Residence 2023 runs for 6 months from April 2023 to September 2023. During this term, Big will be embarking on some projects and participating in some of the Centre's ongoing new writing development programmes. Look forward to his engagements:

  • Apr to Jun 2023:
    Begin draft of new play-in-development
     
  • 24 May 2023:
    The Big Book Launch!  In partnership with Teater Ekamtra, this is a public book launch celebrating the print and release of "KOLONG", an anthology of Malay-language plays written by Big. "Kolong" is published independently by Moka Mocha Ink.
     
  • May to Jun 2023:
    Involvement in New Scripts Residency Garage June 2023 cycle for reading and selection of scripts, and to offer individual script consultations for shortlisted scripts
     
  • 22 & 23 July 2023:
  • Conducting a public 2-day workshop, The Transcreation Workshop, focused on the adaptation/transaltion/transcreation of plays to the Singaporean context/audience. This is suitable for writers and theatre enthusiasts of all experience levels.
     
  • July to Aug 2023:
    Involvement in New Scripts Residency Garage August 2023 cycle or reading and selection of scripts, and to offer individual script consultations for shortlisted scripts
     
  • July-Sep 2023:
    Play-in-development next phase editing/writing, workshopping/rehearsing

    Reading Event/Showcase
