As part of the Singapore International Festival of Arts 2026, Centre 42 presents Creating spaces, Bringing people together: A Roundtable, where we explore and reflect on the careers of three Singapore theatre pioneers who championed our local arts and theatre scene throughout the 1990s and beyond.
William Teo brought us the Festival Village and led the well-known Asia-in-Theatre Research Centre; Christina Sergeant pushed amateur theatrics to greater heights and introduced professional mime; Kuo Pao Kun created and held spaces for independent, experimental and alternative art forms and artists. While Teo, Sergeant and Kuo excelled in their respective artistic fields, all three were also recognised as cultural leaders for bringing people together to create productions, fostering communities, and spearheading initiatives that have left a significant impact on Singapore theatre today.
This roundtable also serves as a coda to a series of documentaries commissioned by SIFA 2026 and created by Centre 42.
Join us for this gathering as we dive into their work in the 1990s, the contexts in which they operated and the legacies they have left for theatre practitioners of today and tomorrow.
Past Present Future: Creating spaces, Bringing people together was commissioned by SIFA 2026.
