Hemang has penned and directed a number of plays, including a modern Noh play All The Crazy People (Wisdom of Monkeys, 2010), Maya: Demon Architect (Esplanade Raga Series/RDG, 2014), site-specific plays for the annual Arts Walk Little India (RDG, 2017-2019), Pongal (Late Night Texting 2019, Dastak 2021) and Timothy and Tara Go Time Travelling (Singapore Book Council, 2025). His works have also been staged under the direction of others, including Radio (Singapore Arts Festival Fringe, 2008), Quit (2022) and The Good Teacher (2021), Mothers (2022) and Greek Salad (2024) for Tamasha Theatre.
Hemang acted as Kent in Ho Tzu Nyen’s The Lear Universe (Singapore Arts Festival, 2008) and Godse in Elangovan’s Satyameva Jayate/Godse (Agni Koothu, 2009, 2013). He was the festival director of the Tamil ten-minute play festival Pathay Nimidam (RDG), which brought together Tamil and non-Tamil theatre practitioners. He was the dramaturg for Saga Seed’s The Shape of a Bird, RDG’s Adukku Veettu Annasamy, Drama Box’s Chinatown Crossings and Bhaskar Arts’ Marabu 2.
Hemang has adapted seminal works of Kalidasa, Tagore and Chekhov. He has been transcreating the writings of his grandfather Cultural Medallion Winner N. Palanivelu and performing them with Maya Dance Theatre (2021-2026).
