24 May 2016 – 26 May 2016 @ Theatre Studio, Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay

Synopsis

A traditional kopi tiam, rich in memories and heritage, is at risk of becoming irrelevant when faced with rapid changes in our society. How should the elderly owner of the kopi tiam and his grandson deal with these external changes and pressures, and negotiate their differing views?

Adapted from Cultural Medallion recipient Kuo Pao Kun's 1986 play, Kopitiam, this experiential and interactive theatre performance will take the audience to the world of traditional coffee shops, allowing them an inlet to this important aspect of Singaporean culture.

Kopitiam also marks the graduation of the 2nd cohort of ARTivate – The Youth Wing of Drama Box. After two years of training and capacity building, the youths, at the helm of director Han Xuemei, resident artist of Drama Box, take up most of the roles in the production of Kopitiam, from (most of the) cast ensemble, assistant production and stage manager, assistant director, to set, lighting and costume designers.

Kopitiam (2016), Review
KopiO or AmericanO The clash between a man and his grandfather is at the heart of Kopitiam. This performance is adapted from Cultural Medallion recipient Kuo Pao Kun’s 1986 play. It is the graduation production of ARTivate, the youth wing of bilingual theatre company Drama Box. Specifically targeted at secondary school students, the programme booklet comes in the form an activity sheet – although I am not sure if the answers are can be found from the play.
