Synopsis

Stories of people, who are misunderstood, controlled and restrained, have emerged in different countries and across the centuries. Franz Kafka, living in Prague in the early twentieth century, was such a person and expressed his plight as an extended metaphor in his absurd novel, Metamorphosis. In this story, Gregor Samsa, lives with his parents and sister in a small apartment. He is a salesman and the sole breadwinner. Misunderstood by his family who are frustrated with his search for purpose and self-worth, he transforms into an ugly insect...

This story resonates with many people, who recognise the isolation experienced by a creative spirit living within a family that neither understands nor tolerates his nature. It is a testament to Kafka's great writing, that we, in Singapore today, find enlightenment in this tale.
