Stories of people, who are misunderstood, controlled and restrained, have emerged in different countries and across the centuries. Franz Kafka, living in Prague in the early twentieth century, was such a person and expressed his plight as an extended metaphor in his absurd novel, Metamorphosis. In this story, Gregor Samsa, lives with his parents and sister in a small apartment. He is a salesman and the sole breadwinner. This story resonates with many people, who recognise the isolation experienced by a creative spirit living within a family that neither understands nor tolerates his nature. It is a testament to Kafka's great writing, that we, in Singapore today, find enlightenment in this tale.
