Inspired by the 40th anniversary of the 1977 launch of two spacecraft, Voyager I and II, the interstellar craft that carried two 'Golden Records' deep into space, part one of the Golden Record (NUS Arts Festival 2017) opened this 'cultural Noah's Ark' time capsule and examined its interstellar contents in the new light of the 21st century.
How do we represent Singapore to extra-terrestrials? What kind of food, sounds, music or language can we use to accurately represent our multicultural diaspora? How do we leave a Singaporean legacy when so much history and culture is already being forgotten?
Building on The Golden Record and the mission to represent Earth and humankind to intelligent extra-terrestrial life, The Golden Record 2.0 brings this question of representation back home to Singapore, where our homegrown astrophysics and quantum technology industries prepare to send our own satellites into space. Stringing together responses from scientists, archaeologists, musicians, professors, as well as family, friends and the everyday man, The Golden Record 2.0 discusses both the general and the highly personal representations of our island city. It seeks to uncover what it means to be a Singaporean or to live in Singapore, and what this means to each and every one of us.
