The Gala Performance for the 1994 Festival of Arts is a lighthearted musical entitled Kampong Amber, a collaboration and a celebration of three Singaporean talents: Glen Goei, Dick Lee and Catherine Lim, and the result is bound to be pleasing to everybody.
Kampong Amber is a romantic comedy. Set in the early 1930's, the story revolves around two Peranakan families, one living in a humble kampong house and the other in an opulent mansion, called Amber Ville. Their lives, complicated by a feisty matchmaker, Bibi Molek, become tied in a series of encounters, capers and manoeuvers, ending with a wedding which symbolises the celebration and affirmation of the robustness of the human spirit and the power of love.
