Synopsis

Majestic and truthful, Red tells the tale of an artist torn apart by revolution, and the stunning consequences of one generation turning against another.

Red is a powerful drama that delicately intertwines politics, tradition and family ties.

Set in both contemporary China and the China of the brutal Cultural Revolution (mid 1960s - 1970s), playwright Chay Yew combines history with a personal story of human struggle against adversity.

The play explores the relationship between a proud Beijing opera star, Hua who is accused of crimes against the state and Lin, a young woman eager to learn the art form from Master Hua, but who gets caught up in the revolutionary zealotry of the time.

Against this backdrop enters Sonja Wong a successful Chinese-American romance author, who returns to her homeland to do research for a novel.

Yew brings to light the time where politics overpowered art, and age-old traditions were abolished. There is an undercurrent of mystery throughout the play as hidden truths are slowly revealed.

The play leaves audiences with an understanding of the power of art and an appreciation for artists who endure through times of adversity.
